A Privileged Life Without a Trust Fund
Ashton and Mila are among Hollywood’s most recognizable stars, both having built successful acting careers from a young age. Ashton rose to fame with his breakout role as Michael Kelso on “That ’70s Show” before transitioning into film and business ventures.

Mila gained widespread recognition as Jackie Burkhart in the same series, later becoming a leading actress in films like “Black Swan” and “Bad Moms.”
Despite their fame, the couple has remained relatively private about their personal lives. In 2020, they quietly celebrated their marriage with a small wedding party over the Fourth of July weekend.

The couple had already been legally married, but the gathering allowed them to celebrate with close family and friends. A source revealed, “They’re so happy. They’re so in love.”
While their wedding celebration remained intimate and private, Ashton and Mila have been more vocal about their approach to parenting.

As a couple who built their success from the ground up, they have strong opinions on how to raise their children — especially when it comes to financial responsibility.
Ashton has made it clear that their children — daughter Wyatt Isabelle Kutcher, born in 2014, and son Dimitri Portwood Kutcher, born in 2016 — will not be inheriting their parents’ fortune.
In 2018, the actor appeared on Dax Shepard’s podcast, “Armchair Expert,” where he shared his perspective on raising self-sufficient children. He mentioned that he planned on taking Wyatt and Dimitri camping as part of his effort to instill resilience in them.

“I want them to be really resourceful, and I wanna teach them to be really resourceful,” the actor explained. He further elaborated on the reasoning behind their decision, stating that his children would not have trust funds waiting for them.

“Hopefully they’ll be motivated to have what they had or some version of what they had,” Ashton added. Instead of passing down their wealth, he and Mila plan to donate their money to charitable causes. However, he acknowledged that their stance wasn’t entirely rigid.

If one of their children came up with a promising business idea, for example, he would be open to investing. “My kids are living a really privileged life — like unbelievably privileged life and they don’t even know it,” Ashton admitted.

Mila echoed similar sentiments when discussing their parenting philosophy. While promoting “Bad Moms” on the Australian radio podcast “The Kyle and Jackie O Show” in 2016, she shared that she and Ashton had always prioritized raising their children with strong values.
“The one topic of conversation we had even prior to ever having kids was always, ‘How do you raise a child to not be an a-hole?'” she said. She reflected on her own upbringing, noting the stark contrast between her childhood and her children’s privileged lives.

“I grew up poor. My husband and I both did,” she revealed, describing meals of “ketchup soup” during her youth. Born in the former Soviet Union, Mila moved to Los Angeles as a child and worked hard to achieve success. “[We] are very aware of what a dollar is worth,” she stated. “Nothing’s been handed to us.”

The actress emphasized that they intended to raise Wyatt and Dimitri with a strong understanding of hard work and financial responsibility.
“It’s a matter of teaching them from a very early age that, you know, ‘Mommy and Daddy may have a dollar, but you’re poor,'” she joked. “You are very poor. You have nothing. Mommy and Daddy have a bank account.”

The Hollywood star also pointed out the importance of setting boundaries, explaining that while she and Ashton could afford to give their children anything, they made a conscious effort not to.

“My kids are never gonna know what it’s like to not have fresh groceries. My kids are never gonna know what it’s like to not have new clothes. I say no to my kids because I want to say no, not ’cause I have to say no, and that’s a very different struggle,” she added.

Parenting Comes First
For Ashton, fatherhood has always been his most important role. While attending the Los Angeles premiere of his Netflix film “Your Place or Mine” in February 2023, he made it clear, “For me, the number one role I will ever play is to be a father. It’s the most important role in my life.”

His commitment to his family even influenced his career choices. The actor revealed that he took a pay cut so the film’s production could be moved closer to home, allowing him to spend more time with Mila and their children.
“I’m fortunate enough to be able to do something like that, which most people aren’t,” he admitted. The star also shared a guiding principle he has as a parent, referencing a quote from Mexican businessman Carlos Slim.
“A lot of people try to make the world a better place for their children, and what they should really be doing is making better children for the world,” he said. “So my number one job in the world is making better children for the world, and I’m trying my hardest.”

His famous wife has been just as open about the challenges and rewards of parenting. While promoting “A Bad Moms Christmas” in 2017, she spoke about the balance between motherhood and her career, explaining that she had become less anxious about leaving her children for work.

“You’re still stressed out and there’s still the idea of the guilt of leaving your kids, but you know that they’ll be OK,” she said. Mila has also ensured her lifestyle revolves around their children’s needs.
“I can write you a book on kid-friendly activities anywhere in the world,” she joked. Instead of spending nights out at clubs, she and Ashton now fill their days with visits to zoos, bouncy houses, and libraries. “We have a public library card everywhere we go,” she added.

Beyond planning fun and educational activities for their children, Mila and Ashton have also been mindful about instilling gratitude and avoiding excess. One way they’ve done this is by setting firm boundaries around gift-giving.
“Last year when we celebrated Christmas, Wyatt was two and it was too much. We didn’t give her anything — it was the grandparents. The kid no longer appreciates the one gift. They don’t even know what they’re expecting; they’re just expecting stuff,” she explained.

While setting boundaries around material things was important, Mila also recognized that parenting came with its own challenges — especially when it came to managing emotions.
She admitted that while she had no guilt over her major parenting decisions, there were moments she regretted. “The only thing I’ve ever felt guilty about, and I actually apologized to my 3-year-old, is when I overreact,” she admitted.

The actress made a point to teach accountability by modeling it herself, often apologizing when she felt she had been too harsh. “I’ll walk away, and I’ll come back, and I’ll sit [Wyatt] down and I’m like, ‘I’m really sorry. Mommy overreacted. Do you forgive me?'” the “Black Swan” star shared.

Her sense of humor also plays a role in her parenting. During an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” in October 2022, Mila admitted that she had lied to her children on occasion, joking about the little white lies many parents tell to get through the day.
A Home Built on Their Values
Ashton and Mila’s commitment to a grounded lifestyle isn’t just reflected in their parenting — it’s also evident in their family home.
Their Los Angeles farmhouse is more than just a barn-inspired structure — it is a carefully planned retreat. From the beginning, they made it clear that they weren’t looking for a showpiece. “We wanted a home, not an estate,” said Mila.
“We wanted the house to look like an old barn, something that had been here for decades, that was then converted into a house. But it also had to feel modern and relevant,” her husband elaborated.
The property includes a main house, a guesthouse that doubles as an entertainment barn, and a barbecue pavilion. The structures are arranged along a central axis to take full advantage of the property’s scenic views.
Designed by architect Howard Backen, the home combines traditional and contemporary elements. Reclaimed wood, board-form concrete, and large glass windows give it a rustic yet modern feel. The couple was deeply involved in every decision, from the size of the beams to the texture of the materials.
Although the house was built to resemble a barn, its interior avoids a purely farmhouse aesthetic. Instead, interior designer Vicky Charles incorporated refined touches giving a more contemporary feel.
Every piece of furniture and décor was carefully selected to create a stylish, functional, and comfortable space for their family.
One of the home’s most unexpected design choices came from a chandelier from their previous house. During a virtual interview, Mila explained that she had never liked the piece, calling it “obnoxious.” Instead of getting rid of it, she and Ashton found a way to make it work by designing their new home around it.
From skipping an inheritance to setting firm boundaries, Ashton and Mila are intentional about raising grounded children despite their wealth. Their commitment extends beyond parenting to their home and lifestyle, reinforcing the values they want to pass down.
