Five years ago, they weighed over 1,000 pounds combined. Today, one is nearly unrecognizable — and the other just revealed a relationship no one saw coming.

Amy and Tammy Slaton were never strangers to struggle. Raised in the small town of Morganfield, Kentucky, the sisters grew up in a household led by a single mother. Life wasn’t easy.

Alongside their three siblings — Chris, Misty, and Amanda — Amy and Tammy battled more than just the challenges of rural life. They also carried the heavy burden of obesity from a young age.

Their story became known to millions in 2020, when TLC launched “1000-Lb. Sisters.” The show chronicled their journey toward better health and a better future. At the time of the premiere, Amy weighed 406 pounds and Tammy tipped the scales at 605.

Together, they crossed a combined 1,000 pounds — a number that gave the show its name, and the world two unlikely stars. The sisters were determined to make a change as years of weight-related health issues had taken a toll, both physically and emotionally.

The cameras followed them as they worked toward bariatric surgery. It wasn’t just about losing weight. It was about reclaiming their lives. What started as a show about weight loss became much more. Over six seasons, “1000-Lb. Sisters” opened a window into the Slatons’ lives.

Viewers watched as Amy and Tammy navigated hospital stays, surgery prep, and emotional roadblocks. But they also saw moments of joy, humor, and resilience.

The show didn’t shy away from the hard parts. Family tensions, setbacks, and relapses were part of the story. But so were personal triumphs. Fans watched Amy become a mother and saw Tammy confront near-death experiences. Through it all, the sisters kept showing up for each other, and for themselves.

Now, five years later, their story continues to evolve. In this article, we’ll explore their lives. How far they’ve come, and what they’ve overcome.

Tammy’s Turning Point

Tammy’s road to recovery was long, uncertain, and filled with setbacks. From the very start of “1000-Lb. Sisters,” her struggle with weight loss stood out. While Amy made early progress, Tammy’s journey was slower and more complicated.

In season 1, Tammy’s doctor denied her for bariatric surgery because she hadn’t lost enough weight to qualify. The disappointment was heavy. Over the next three years, Tammy continued to fight not just the scale, but addiction, depression, and physical decline.

Her battle with food addiction sent her in and out of rehab. Her health teetered on the edge. Then came 2021. After entering rehab at 689 pounds, Tammy was given a target: lose 100 pounds. It was a daunting task.

Yet, after eight weeks of work, she had lost 60 pounds. The scale read 631.3. Tammy was emotional but proud. “Honestly, I didn’t think I could get that much off,” she said. “It’s hard work and it’s paying off. I can conquer the world.”

But Tammy’s toughest challenge was still ahead. In 2022, shortly after arriving at a rehab facility in Ohio, Tammy’s health took a severe turn. Just one day in, her family received devastating news. She had stopped breathing.

“They’re just telling us that her lungs have given up, and like her body is shutting down,” her sister Amanda recalled. The family braced for the worst. Funeral arrangements were being considered.

Tammy was rushed to the hospital, placed on a ventilator, and put into a medically induced coma. Doctors later performed a tracheotomy to help her breathe. For three weeks, she remained under close watch. Then, in a remarkable turn, she pulled through.

Returning to rehab was the next step. And Tammy did more than just recover. She made progress. By the end of 2022, she had lost 180 pounds. Her weight had dropped to 534 — low enough to qualify for bariatric surgery.

“I need to get to 550 lbs. for me to be approved for surgery,” she had said earlier. When the scale finally confirmed she was under that threshold, it marked a major victory in a battle that had once seemed impossible.

A Second Chance for Tammy — And a New Goal

Tammy Slaton’s turning point came in season 4 of the show. After years of setbacks, she was finally cleared for bariatric surgery. The stakes were high and even her sister Amy voiced her fears. “Anything could happen during surgery,” Amy said. “I couldn’t picture a life without my sister.”

Tammy made it through. And what followed was nothing short of extraordinary.

By 2024, her progress had stunned even her doctors. When she stepped on the scale and saw 303.8 lbs., it was a moment of victory. “I surpassed Dr. Smith’s goal, my goal, all the goals!” she said. Her pride was well-earned.

Tammy had shed nearly 500 pounds. The transformation was more than physical — it was a complete shift in her way of life. She no longer needed a wheelchair or walker to get around. She could ride in a standard car seat without a seatbelt extender. Simple milestones, once out of reach, had become reality.

With mobility restored, Tammy set her sights on a new challenge: skin removal surgery. Her rapid weight loss had left behind excess skin that affected her balance and quality of life.

In the season finale, she traveled to Pennsylvania with her sisters, Amy and Misty, to consult with a new surgeon. Her previous doctor had declined the case explaining that the procedures she needed were too complex.

“I want skin removed pretty much everywhere on my body,” Tammy said at the time. “My legs, my stomach, my arms, my face. I wish it was possible to just do all of it at once.”

She described the physical toll. The skin wasn’t just cosmetic — it disrupted her balance, made walking difficult, and affected her confidence. “I walk like a daggone penguin,” she joked. “My belly goes this way and I’m going that way.”

After an evaluation, Dr. Peter Rubin, a plastic surgeon based in Pittsburgh, approved Tammy for procedures on her lower stomach and chin.

From Weight Loss to Legal Troubles: Amy Slaton’s Life

While Tammy’s transformation stunned viewers, her sister Amy’s journey unfolded in quieter, but no less dramatic, turns.

Amy underwent weight loss surgery in 2019. Since the start of the show, she has lost over 176 pounds. The physical change was significant, but for Amy, it was more than just a number. It opened a door she had long thought closed — motherhood.

In 2022, Amy and her then-husband Michael Halterman welcomed their second child, Glenn Allen Halterman.

He joined his older brother, Gage, making their family of four feel complete. “Now I have both of my miracle boys,” Amy said at the time. “Our family is complete.” But behind the scenes, Amy’s marriage was unraveling.

“There was no support. There was no love. There was no kindness. There was just mental abuse,” she later revealed. In 2023, after six years of marriage, Amy shared that she and Michael had split.

Soon after, she introduced a new boyfriend, Tony Rodgers, on social media. The relationship appeared hopeful — at first. But by 2024, it had ended.

But Amy didn’t give up on Love. She found love again with her now new boyfriend, Brian Scott Lovvorn. In the season seven premiere, Amy told her sister Amanda that Brian had suggested she undergo a tubal ligation reversal inorder to have another child.

“He was talking about me getting my tubes untied,” she said. It was a serious ask and a sign that Amy’s personal life was once again becoming complicated. That complication came to a head in September 2024.

Amy and Brian were arrested at the Tennessee Safari Park after a bizarre incident involving a camel bite. Police responded to the scene and were reportedly met by “suspicious odors” coming from their vehicle. Amy’s sons, Gage and Glenn, were inside the car at the time.

Both adults were charged with illegal drug possession and two counts of child endangerment. Amy later pleaded guilty to simple possession of marijuana and mushrooms. The child endangerment charges were dropped as part of a plea deal finalized in December.

Love, Loss, and A New Beginning for Tammy

Tammy’s journey has never followed a straight path. While her physical transformation stunned viewers, her emotional evolution has been just as profound.

In 2022, Tammy met Caleb Willingham at the Windsor Lane Rehabilitation Center in Gibsonburg, Ohio. Both were patients, battling similar challenges. Their bond was immediate. Caleb proposed in October. By November, they were married. Tammy called him the love of her life.

But their time together was heartbreakingly short. In June 2023, just seven months after their wedding, Caleb died unexpectedly at the age of 40. Tammy was devastated. “He was my best friend and I loved him dearly,” she said. “When I met Caleb, he became my guardian angel — and now he really is watching over me.”

His loss marked a turning point for Tammy — one that extended beyond grief. In a recent episode of 1000-Lb. Sisters, she opened up about a secret she had kept from her family.

“The person I’m dating is a woman,” she revealed. “A few years ago, I came out as pansexual.”

Tammy explained that Caleb’s passing reshaped her views on relationships. After losing him, she no longer wanted to be with men. Her new relationship is the next chapter in a life that has been full of surprises — and strength.
