Doctors found a prostate nodule, and further tests revealed an aggressive form of prostate cancer, classified with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) and metastasis to the bone.

Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, the cancer is hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective medical management. The statement added that Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his physicians.

In the post, he stated, “Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

On May 19, former Vice President Kamala Harris took to Instagram to express her support.

She penned, “Doug and I are saddened to learn of President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis. We are keeping him, Dr. Biden, and their entire family in our hearts and prayers during this time. Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”

Former President Barack Obama also shared his thoughts on X, acknowledging Biden’s history of advocacy in cancer research.

He mentioned, “Michelle and I are thinking of the entire Biden family. Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace. We pray for a fast and full recovery.”

Medical professionals have also weighed in on the diagnosis. Dr. William Dahut, Chief Scientific Officer at the American Cancer Society, commented on the condition in an interview with the BBC.

He described Biden’s cancer as aggressive and noted the seriousness of its spread. “In general, if cancer has spread to the bones, we don’t think it is considered a curable cancer,” he said.

However, Dr. Dahut added that many patients respond well to treatment, saying, “People can live many years with the diagnosis.” He explained that hormone therapies are likely to be used to reduce symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.

This is not Biden’s first encounter with cancer. According to a March 2023 report by NBC News, a skin lesion removed from his chest during a routine physical was found to be basal cell carcinoma.

The White House physician at the time, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, confirmed that all cancerous tissue had been successfully removed and no further treatment was needed.

As reactions continue to pour in, Joe Biden remains in consultation with his doctors, reviewing the next steps for his treatment. The focus now turns to the management of his condition and the public support shown by leaders and citizens alike.
